Frequently Asked Questions
How soon after I order a shed can I expect it to be built?
When you order your new shed you will be given a scheduled build date usually within two business days after approved estimate. Our lead times vary depending on the time of year and the size/style/options your order contains. Contact us to directly to learn about specific lead times for your desired building.
Will I need to get a building permit?
The customer should consult their local building department to determine what is required. There are also city/neighborhood regulations that must be adhered to whether a permit is required or not. These regulations can include building size and height, property line, easement, and principal structure setbacks. These regulations must be considered when choosing a suitable location for your new shed.
In most cities a permit is not required for sheds that are 200 square feet or less, but a zoning permit may be required. If nether a permit or zoning permit is required there are still requirements for each city as to how tall a shed can be, where the shed can be placed on your property, and how far of a setback is required. Most cities typically require a 5-foot set back. This information can usually be found online by looking up Accessory Building Requirements along with your city or zip code. Customers are responsible for obtaining any permits needed and checking their local requirements regarding sheds. If you are having trouble finding this information, we will try our best to help you find this information.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, please reach out to us and we will walk you through the entire process.
How do I know if the area I've chosen is suitable for the placement of my new storage shed?
Your new building can be built right on the existing grade of a level backyard. If your yard is not level, you should consider providing a level site for your building for best overall appearance. This is the most important part. It is highly recommended that the ground does not slope more than 3". However, any place where the grade slopes no more than 4" is suitable. The more the ground slopes, the more additional leveling materials are required, which raises the floor of the shed off the ground. We come prepared to level the shed up to 4" with concrete blocks and wedges. Sites that slope more than 4” will incur additional leveling costs. If your site is not completely level our only option is to use these concrete blocks and treated shims to level the building, which can take away from the overall appearance of your shed.
If your site is extremely soft, slopes more than 4", or you'd like to minimize the use of leveling materials then additional site preparation will be required before we arrive to build your shed. In these cases we recommend a level rock base using 3/4” or smaller crushed rock or gravel with an approximate depth of 6”. Proper site prep ensures less problems down the road.
Provide at least 24” of clearance from any trees, fences, overhanging limbs, walls and other immovable objects.
Shed sites further than 175’ from the closest parking location for your Life Shed crew will incur additional charges.
Please clean up after your pets before we arrive on your build date.
